Don the Comedian
In
the early days of his comedy career Don used to say, “I’m
a Buddhist comedian, I keep dying but they keep wanting me to come
back.” Since 1990, however, Don has been wowing audiences
in comedy rooms around Australia. In 1993 he performed at The Basement
in Sydney for the legendary Amnesty International comedy benefit,
and these days he’s wanted in several states.
He
is a founding member (and president) of The
Laugh Resort, an association of Western Australian comic
performers. (Yes, comedians are capable of having formal meetings – just don’t ask them to “pass a motion through
the chair”.)
Some of Don’s more memorable comedic moments
include: Compering for Elliot Goblet,
compering for Pommy Johnson, supporting Austen Tayshus during his many
visits to Perth, compering and organising the Stand
Up For East Timor benefit with Rove
McManus, and performing at Werzel’s Comedy Lounge in
its inaugural year. He is also very proud of his central, piojneering
role in the comedy movement that introduced and encouraged the likes
of Rove McManus, Dave
Hughes and Dave Callan.
Don has a gentle, absurd style with lots of observations, both political
and domestic. He plays guitar and sings original songs such as Pig
In Disguise, Rhyming Cutlets, Last Guy At the Party and The
Bikie Song.
These days he is best known
around Perth for his role as a comic Master of Ceremonies —
the guy who holds it all together, introduces the acts and warms
up the audience. He is just as capable however, of doing a forty
to fifty minute head-line spot, something he has done in many, many
comedy rooms around Australia.
